If someone were to suggest the college rock scene was dead, gone and presumably buried they might have missed the sounds of Indie group, Velcro Mary. Their album, Leave A Light On is the example of college radio rock that embodies the soul of the slow grooves of alternative rock noise of the non-controversial. Listeners will find this album to be largely mid-to-low-tempo music that unfortunately doesn’t quite inspire my blood to flow, but , rather to settle and cool. That said, there are some exceptional numbers like “Something In My Eye” that invoke a nod to the modern popularity of 1990’s nostalgia, and in turn provide a sound to jive to. Other top tracks one can pull from Leave A Light On to get this sort of fuzzy and warm feeling for that glorious decade include “Smoke” and “Freezing To Death.” Velo Mary show through these latter tracks an ability to provoke the semi-conscious in a sort of hard rock meets something resembling psych rock noise. In all, I can propose having these cats grace your local student union or hip-type establishment in the background while you chat up that person next to you. —Nick Kuzmack
